My bathroom is a place where I can hide away for a few hours and just relax.

However, my bathroom is in dire need of a redesign. The space is currently looking really outdated. Presuming I was not the only one in the universe who thinks this about their bathroom – I thought I would create this handy step by step guide to help you get inspired.

Planning Stage

Step 1 = Set you budget

This is the most important step in any design project. 

Do not overspend.

Step 2 = Decide on what you want the finished picture to be

You cannot work out how you are going to get there unless you know where you are going.

The key thing to have in mind is that bathrooms do not have to be boring and functional rooms. Especially at this stage you can be really creative.

Have in mind:

     How big is the room?

o  You can always take elements of a design and recreate it on a smaller or larger scale.

   Who is using the room?

o  Is this an en-suite bathroom for guests?

o  Is this an en-suite bathroom for you and your partner?

o  Is this a family bathroom?

Deciding on the furniture

Step 3 = The big question – Bath or Shower?

Make your decision. To install we recommend calling a plumber to ensure you do not have any nasty leaks! 

Bath

Research the types of baths available.
Find out to suit you and your space.

There is such a range of baths available. If you want to save a bit of money consider looking into getting a second hand bath. It may have plenty of life left in it and you might be able to get something a little bit different.

If you just want a standard rectangular bath, the paneling can make a huge difference. Use it to match the bath in with the style you want to create.

Alternatively, there are some beautiful free standing baths that are fantastic if you have a larger space to use.

Shower

Think about how your shower is going to fit into your space.

If you opt for just a shower, then you will probably have a little more space to play with. Use this in the shower area and give yourself more room to move. 

My favourite idea is the glass panelled doors. This type of unique detailing really helps create a personal vibe to the space.

 If you are going for the combo then there is still a huge range of ideas you can take inspiration from. This idea is ideal for if you are a little short on space. The black shower head and small bath looks so effective if you tie in the colour scheme with the rest of the space.

Step 4 – The Sink

Again, with the sink, there is plenty of choice and selection. The freestanding sinks are ideal if you have a large space. However, if you are a little short on space, you may want to consider something with more storage. A floating or built in sink gives you more space for under sink storage.

If you’re building an en-suite bathroom for you and your partner, perhaps consider a pair of sinks. I could certainly do with 2 at home!

If you’re creating a family bathroom and have young children consider a lowered sink or a step. This will allow them to have easy access to the sink.

Step 4 = Select you toilet.

I do not feel like I need to show you pictures of loos for this one. If you can find one to match the colour of your bath/sink then it will fit better into your design.

Not a lot of room left for a toilet? Have you consider one under the stairs? Alternatively, rescue an underused cupboard space.

Step 6 Lighting

Before buying your Bathroom lights we recommend you take a look at our bathroom lighting blog. It wall explain the IP rating required for each zone in detail. We have also provided a few handy suggestions for lights for each zone. . 

For the bathroom lights you need to consider the IP rating. The bathroom is divided into zones.  For each zone you will need to consider the IP rating. 

Zone 0 = Inside your bath or shower. Requires IPX7 or above. These are usually sealed downlights and spotlights. 

Option 1 – EL-20064 by Endon Lighting  -   A pack of 6 blue LED plinth lights. IP67. £31.68. 

Option 2 – SauncaSL50 by Firstlight  Modern chrome finish. IP68 rated. £175.50. 

Zone 1 = Up to 2.25m around your bath or shower. Requires IPx4/5 or above. This zone is usually a wall or may include the ceiling if you have a low ceiling.

Option 1 = BATH/MN1 by Elstead Lighting.  A traditionally styled bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £89.10. 

Option 2 = OBO0775by Dar Lighting. Traditionally styled wall light with decorative opal shade. IP44 rated. £63.50. 

Option 3 = LOG7150by Dar Lighting. Modern spot light in  glass and chrome. IP44. £69.50.

Option 4 = Cosmo39615 by Saxby Lighting.  Modern single chrome bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £13.99. 

Option 5 = BATH/LUN2 by Elstead Lighting. A 2 light  crystal decorated bathroom light. IP44 rated. £243.00. 

Option 6 = Bath/BB1 BRZ by Elstead lighting. A traditional styled bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £117.01. 

Zone 2 = 2.25-3m above the bath and 0.6m around the sink. Requires IPX4/5. If you are considering an over the sink lit mirror and an over the sink light they will need to have an IP rating.

 Mirror = DIA99/Clock wall mirror by Dar lighting. A modern bathroom mirror. IP44 rated. £285.00. 

Option 1 = EL-20093 by Endon Lighting . A white single head halogen lamp spotlight. IP44 rated. £28.80. 

Option 2 = Showtime by Firstlight. Hollywood dressing room inspired lights. IP44 rated. £85.00.

Option 3 = 8236CH by Firstlight . Energy saving shaver light with shaver socket. IP44 rated £120.90.

Option 4 = ADA0750 by Dar Lighting . Double insulated chrome bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £45.00. 

Option 5 = Aylesbury BATH/AY1 by Elstead lighting – traditional style single wall light finished in chrome. IP44 rated. £94.50. 

Zone 3 = If you need to have any power outlets – e.g. shaver sockets – they need to be 3m outside of zone 1. 

Areas not in  zone 1 or 2 do not need an IP rating. But if you can find an IP rated ceiling light you light I would recommend it.  

Step 7 = The walls

This is where you can get a little inventive.

Option 1 = Tiling.

There is a huge selection of tiles available. If you have a small space consider using mirrored tiles to bounce the light around.

Love this design. You can be really inventive here. I think it would be great to replace this words with family names (if you’re designing a family bathroom). In addition, you can use the coloured tiles to pick up a the colour theme from the rest of the room.

Option 2 = Paint.

As long as you pick specific bathroom paint, you can really “paint the town red” here.

You are not limited to muted colours in the bathroom. Especially if you are designing your ensuite, pick colours you love.

Option 3 = Using natural materials.

Covering the walls with slate, stone or wood can look fantastic in the bathroom if done well.

This bathroom is a beautiful combination of wood and stone materials.

Step 8 = The Floor

Choose tiles, carpet or wood. The best option is going to depend on the style of the rest of the room. 

If you opt for wood or tiles, make sure to have a non-slip mat for when you step out of the bath or shower.

Step 9 = Dressing the window

If you window is next to the bath, find a good quality blind. Fabric this close to the bath is likely to go mouldy. However, if it is a couple of meters away, you will be able to get away with some fabric to match the design of your room.

Step 10 = Add decorative items.

This is the time to go and buy that beautiful soap dispenser and any other accessories you need for your perfect bathroom.

Are you redesigning your bathroom?

The standard bathroom furniture – the bath, toilet, sink and shower – are all relatively easy to source. You just need to select a style and ensure the size matches your physical space.

However, choosing lighting for your bathroom always appears to be so complicated. Did someone say something about IP rating? You might ask yourselves what the heck that means. But do not worry. We are here to demystify bathroom light selection.

Consider your bathroom in the terms of zones. We have found you this helpful diagram to explain the zones to you. Where are you considering putting lights? Select the relevant zone and then you can see which IP rating you need.

Because of the high chance that the lights will be exposed to moisture, you should only put lights in your bathroom that have been designed for it. Also, to ensure you are not at risk, always ensure a qualified electrician installs your bathroom lights.

Your guide to IP Ratings

For bathroom lights, the second digit of the IP ratings is the most important when selecting your lighting. The IP ratings refer to the degree of risk of electric shock.

The X represents another digit. However, this is not important in relevance to the lights bathroom suitability.

The scale:

• IPX0 – No protection
• IPX1 – Drip proof
• IPX3 – Rain proof
• IPX4 – Splash proof (suitable for zone 1/2)
• IPX5 – Water jet proof (suitable for zone 1/2)
• IPX6 -  Powerful water jet proof
• IPX7 – Watertight (immersible) = Suitable for Zone 0
• IPX8 – Pressure watertight

Zone 0 – Inside the bath, shower or wet room

All lights within a bath or shower cubicle or wet room need to have an IP rating of at least IP67 and have a low voltage (max 12V).

Inside you bath, shower or wet room

The lights for zone 0 are usually spot lights and recessed. They are available in a variety of lamp colours.

Option 1 – EL-20064 by Endon Lighting  -   A pack of 6 blue LED plinth lights. IP67. £31.68. 

These are ideal for the sides of the bath or if you want to light up a wet room or shower cubical.

Option 2 – SauncaSL50 by Firstlight  Modern chrome finish. IP68 rated. £175.50. 

This spot light is specifically designed for use in a Jacuzzi or sauna. 

Zone 1 – 2.25m above the floor around the bath or shower

All lights within this zone need an IP rating of at least IP44 – although if you clean with water jets an IP rating of IPX5 will be needed).

Usually this area will only include wall space. So we have selected a range of wall lights to show you the choice you have in bathroom wall lights. 

Bathroom Lights - Zone 1 - The wall around your bath non longer has to be dull and un-illuminated

These lights will usually be on the wall around the sides of your bath. There is a range of bathroom lighting available in traditional and contemporary styles.  You have a choice between either traditional wall lights or spot lights. The perk of spot lights is that you can aim them at the book you are reading in the bath. It’s also worth considering picking a light with a pull cord which will help if you do not want the light on all of the time.

Option 1 = BATH/MN1 by Elstead Lighting.  A traditionally styled bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £89.10. 

Features a G9 mains voltage halogen hidden within a decorative styled candle lamp shade.

Option 2 = OBO0775by Dar Lighting. Traditionally styled wall light with decorative opal shade. IP44 rated. £63.50. 

Features a pull cord, so this would be ideal for when you need a low light for when you’re relaxing in the bath.

Option 3 = LOG7150by Dar Lighting. Modern spot light in  glass and chrome. IP44. £69.50. Features a decorative mirrored back plate. So if your bathroom feature mirrored tiles, this is really easy to add in. It also has a pull cord for easy on/off and is double insulated. In addition, it is also LED.

Option 4 = Cosmo39615 by Saxby Lighting.  Modern single chrome bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £13.99. 

We find these lights are really popular. The style suits both residential and commercial bathrooms.

Option 5 = BATH/LUN2 by Elstead Lighting. A 2 light  crystal decorated bathroom light. IP44 rated. £243.00. 

This is one of the few double light wall lights we have for the bathroom. It is finished in a really traditional bronze and is decorated with the beautiful crystal balls.

Option 6 = Bath/BB1 BRZ by Elstead lighting. A traditional styled bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £117.01. 

This is a really classical and decorative solution for if you are looking to create a traditionally styled space. The wall light also uses G9 mains  voltage halogen lamps, so it is really easy to retrofit an equivalent LED lamp.

Zone 2 – 0.6m outside parameter of the bath, shower or sink + the space above 2.25m-3m above the bath or shower

In recent years, lighting manufacturers have been making a real effort to create bathroom suitable ceiling lights that look decorative as well. You do not just have to select boring and functional lights anymore. Have as much enjoyment picking out your bathroom lights as any other room in the house.

All lights in this zone need to have an IP rating of a minimum of IPX4 (IPX5 where jets of water are used for cleaning). 

With your ceiling lights, you need to consider a fitting that provides lighting to your space. Think in terms of lighting levels. The ceiling lights need to create an overall light for normal bathroom use. However, you can combine them with wall lights (and candles) to provide a low level lighting when you just was to relax. 

Bathroom lights - Zone 2 - Modern and traditional ceiling lights.
Flush lights, spot lights and pendant fittings.

Option 1 = 540-34BS by Endon Lighting.  A modern flush fitting ceiling light. IP54. £47.04. 

This ceiling light is flush to the ceiling. So ideal if you have short ceilings and is limited by height.

Option 2 = Pearl6151 by Firstlight. A decorative 3 light ceiling light. IP44 rated. £131.82. 

Each shade is decorated with crystal glass. So this will look stunning whether or not the light is turned on. This ceiling light uses G9 mains voltage halogens, so if you really want LED lights you can retrofit with an LED Lamp.

Option 3 = EL-20017 by Endon Lighting. Modern down light featuring decorative blue LEDs. IP44. £49.92. 

The main lamp – a GU10 halogen lamp - can be replaced with an LED equivalent. This really is ideal for modern bathrooms, especially if you are struggling for ceiling height.

Option 4 = EL-1003-5CH by Endon Lighting. Modern decorative 5 light chrome ceiling light. IP44. £144.00. 

This is a really popular fitting and a few customers have actually brought one of these to use as a wall light. We have one of these on display in the showroom and it looks really stylish. The lamps are G9 halogen, so you have the option to retrofit this with an LED lamp.

Option 5 = 7443CCby Searchlight. Modern chrome 3 light spot ceiling light. IP44. £47.04. 

The perk of a spotlight fitting is that you can ensure the light is exactly where you need it in your space. These are GU10 halogens can be retrofitted to LED.

Option 6 = Eden8313GR by Firstlight. Industrial style grey  pendant light. IP44 rated. £61.62. 

This light is actually being marketed by Firstlight as a garden light. However, we agree with a number of customers that this would work fantastically well as a bathroom light as well. As the IP rating makes this safe for bathroom use, we have decided to include it in the line up for this blog. It provides you with a style that is different from the rest of the range on offer. It would also look great in converted buildings or if you have slighting higher ceilings to play with.

Option 7 = Disc CF10by Firstlight. Features an opal glass shade and a blue light projection onto the ceiling. IP44 Rated. £61.62. 

Due to the opal glass shade this light provides a really soft light. However, the coloured ceiling light makes this ideal for modern bathrooms. The main light is a standard E27 lamp, so you could retrofit this to LED if you wanted to.

Option 8 = CRA0550 by Dar Lighting. Decorative 5 light bathroom multi-arm pendant. IP44 rated. £148.50. 

Features alabaster glass shades in addition to crystal beads and drops. This ceiling light looks beautiful on or off. The lamps are G9 halogens – so they can be retrofitted to LEDs.

Bathroom lights - Zone 2 -  Modern and Traditional Wall Lights
Spot lights, shaver lights, hollywood style and bathroom LED mirror

 Mirror = DIA99/Clock wall mirror by Dar lighting. A modern bathroom mirror. IP44 rated. £285.00. 

Features a digital clock so you can keep track of the time. This mirror also has: a demist function, shaver socket and decorative LED lights. Ideal for any family or commercial bathroom .

Option 1 = EL-20093 by Endon Lighting . A white single head halogen lamp spotlight. IP44 rated. £28.80. 

This wall light is finished in a really clean white and has a pull cord – so you will not need this on all the time. The perk of this being a GU10 halogen lamp is that you can retrofit with a LED GU10 lamp if you prefer. You can get a matching ceiling spot lamp if you want a matching set.

Option 2 = Showtime by Firstlight. Hollywood dressing room inspired lights. IP44 rated. £85.00. These are ideal for your bathroom or dressing table. Operated by pull cord, so you do not need to have them on all the time. Features decorative mirrored back plate.

Option 3 = 8236CH by Firstlight . Energy saving shaver light with shaver socket. IP44 rated £120.90. Because this light features a shaver socket, we would recommend this be right at the edge of zone 2 and preferably over a mirror. This will ensure the exposure to moisture is limited.  It features a chrome finish with a frosted glass diffuser. So this is a really practical light which will go in any bathroom.

Option 4 = ADA0750 by Dar Lighting . Double insulated chrome bathroom wall light. IP44 rated. £45.00. 

Features an opal glass shade which will give out a soft light. It takes SES Candle lamps – so if you want an LED lamp you can retrofit.

Option 5 = Aylesbury BATH/AY1 by Elstead lighting – traditional style single wall light finished in chrome. IP44 rated. £94.50. 

Comes complete with a glass shade. Provides a soft light, so ideal if you’re looking to create an atmosphere in your bathroom.

Outside of the these zones

If you are fortunate enough to have a very large bathroom, you will have areas that fall outside the stated zones. These areas do not have a minimum IP rating requirement. However, we would recommend only using specified bathroom lighting. When you are mixing water and electricity, it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Any socket outlets you need – either for shavers, ply sockets or rechargeable toothbrushes -  need to be in this zone. Every  outlets should be a minimum distance 3m outside zone 1. In addition, the circuit  must be provided with a 30ma RCD protection. These additional protections are another important reason as to why you need an electrician involved in the project.

September 2014 has so far been a really exciting month for us. 

Most of our suppliers use this month to launch their new catalogues! This has been really exciting, especially for me, as I have been able to get a fantastic preview of all the new products. Although, I am now attempting to plan all the possible ways I can redecorate my home so I can fit more lighting in….

So this is an ideal time to be redecorating your home. You have never had so much lighting choice. Finding lights to match your ideal room just got easier.

You will be seeing lots of new and exciting indoor lighting and outdoor lighting products and designs appearing on our site over the next few weeks! The new lights are spread across a whole range of areas. We have new products up for the: living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and garden. The fitting ranges from table lamps to ceiling pendants to spot lights. In addition, the light styles vary to fit traditional, modern and contemporary. We don’t limit the lighting products we offer you by style and aim to give you the widest possible selection from all the new ranges.

Last week, we were up at Endon's launch. They have a fantastic new selection of lighting and homeware items! We have some of them in the showroom, so do come visit and have a look. They have also launched some very exciting new items into their lighting catalogue. While some of their products still stick to the really popular contemporary items, they have also released some really visually exciting items.

Introducing you to the ultra modern “Silhouette” by Endon Lighting. This light actually got us really excited. It’s something completely different to anything we currently have on the site. The outline is covered in LEDs (so it is super cheap to run). However, it provides you with the shape of a traditional light. We would be really interested to get your thoughts on this one. Is it to modern? Or do you think it would be ideal in the right sort of setting? 

Copper is has been really popular this year. This trend seems to be continuing strong into the 2014/15 season as well. This “Giamatti” by Endon lighting is a really clever way of redesigning the trend. The shapes really remind me of the glass flasks I used to use at school. So this would be ideal for the scientist in your life. I personally think this would look fantastic in a hallway if you have a curved staircase. If you have high ceilings this would be ideal. 

"Langella" by Endon lighting. If you are want something a little more traditional and with a bit of crystal this is ideal. This type of fitting has always been really popular. It is a semi flush fitting and so sits really close to the ceiling. It is an ideal solution for is you have low ceilings. This is the antique brass version; however, it also comes in polished chrome if you want a slightly more modern finish. 

This week we have also been visiting our other friends at Dar lighting. They are spilt into two lighting ranges. The majority of their range is Dar. These lights cover the entire range of products – ceiling pendant lights, flush lights, table lamps, spot lights, bathroom lights and outdoor lights. This beautiful bronze wood effect collection "Joshua" is by David Hunt Lighting. Last year, this collection only consisted of a beautiful, but very solitary wall light. However, much to my excitement, it now includes a 3 and 5 light dual mount pendant lights and a table lamp. The light is shaped to look like driftwood but is finished in bronze. These would be ideal in either a residential home or in a hotel setting.

As these are made by David Hunt Lighting, the entire collection is made in Britain.

This is a fantastic display of the Academy, Box and Ludlow lighting ranges from Dar. They work really well together. The Academy lights (the 5 and 3 light ceiling pendants) were part of the range last year. We found them to be a really popular fitting. They have been installed in bars and residential properties. The addition of the Ludlow (the 2 and 4 light table lamps) to Dar’s collection will complement the Academy range.

If you are not a fan of having to rewire and already have a cable and lamp hanging from your ceiling, your solution is a non-electric shade. Particularly this year, the range is huge. The non-electric lighting shades available means you can easily keep up with the newest trends.

For example, this non-electric pendant by Dar allows you to quickly and easily update your space. The “Zephyr” is a non electric glass copper ripple pendant. It fits straight onto your existing 29-42mm lamp holder.

These amazing ceiling multiarm pendants are from the "Doreen" collection by Dar. This shows the stunning 12 light pendant and 5 light pendant. I have seen both these used to amazing effect in hotels. From this, with the right coloured shades, I can safely say they really suit any traditionally styled space.

The antler themed lighting trend has been around for a few years and is going from strength to strength. While the lights used to feature real antlers, they are now made of resin. This Antler lighting range is designed, made and hand finished in Britain by David Hunt Lighting. This season, Dar have begun to really venture into the modern LED lights. Their “Carina” LED Pendant is height adjustable and decorated with a crystal ball. You can just see it in this picture.  However, we were impressed with how much light it gives out. The design also looks really stylish.

This “Neopolitan” table lamp by Dar is one of my personal favourites from this collection. The base of the table lamp is ceramic and the postage stamp design used to decorate adds some fantastic colours. It reminds me of travelling and my brief stint of stamp collecting that occurred in my teenage years. The shade is sold separately, but that means you can really find one that matches your current lights.

Dar Lighting also do some really beautiful outdoor wall lights. They are very contemporary and so look decorative but are also really functional. This is just a small supply of the range of outdoor lights that are part of Dar’s lighting range. These lights would look ideal on both residential and commercial buildings – particularly restaurants and hotels.
